In May 2017, Raw Material met with two coffee producer groups in Pitalito, Huila, to understand what is preventing farmers from accessing the specialty market. These groups represent almost 300 families, around660Ha of coffee farmland, and around 1 million kg of coffee (parchment) production each year. Despite good production levels, income from coffee for these families dropped to unsustainable levels in the past few years. They face a crossroad; either find alternative means of income outside coffee, or find a more stable and sustainable market. During these discussions we heard farmers describe their core challenges: a lack of key infrastructure; and lack of stable prices to provide certainty for investment in improved quality. Together, we also uncovered a wide gap between how coffee quality is discussed and measured at the farm level compared with the roasting end of the value chain. To address these challenges, we launched the Red Associations. With the new infrastructure in place, we are able to pay individual farmers a minimum fixed price of 1M COP/carga of dry parchment coffee they produce through a community lot. This price results in double the household income of a typical coffee producing family, compared with the average income in the regular market over the past 5 years. Once the new infrastructure is built, fixed price payments can get directly to producers through a transparent system. The goal is to achieve stable and sustainable prices for community coffee lots through improved quality control, shared knowledge, and a connection to the specialty coffee market. Red in Spanish means network, representing the producers and roasters working together to create a sustainable value chain. El Carmen is the first member of the Red Associations project, based in Pitalito, Huila. The Red Association in this region began with the creation of a drying hub, where producers from the local area could dry their harvest without the risk of rainfall rinsing away their profits. Previously, producers had to sell their parchment wet, through an intermediary who would dry on their behalf. This meant that this vital step was out of the producer’s control, which in turn meant they could only capture a portion of the potential return for their harvest.

Dark roasts have been overlooked for a long time, and in fancy coffee circles it’s always the lighter roasted coffees that hog all the attention. Not now. Our French roast is a nod to some of our favourite American roasters – this coffee has sweetness, complexity and heft. The Honduran coffee that makes up 90% of this blend was grown, harvested and processed with organic methods in Honduras, but due to late paperwork it isn’t officially allowed to be certified ‘organic’. We still made sure the farmer was paid the organic price though, and the flavour profile hits the sweet spot perfectly for this style of roasting.

The CK7 Disc is for cyclists who need an all-season bike capable of handling year round weather or long commutes, but is also comfortable enough for light touring use.
The CK7 Disc uses a lightweight 6061 aluminium frame ensuring excellent ride quality with comfort-orientated geometry. Flat disc brake mounts are used to fit modern hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes. The use of thru-axles keeps everything stiff and secure under heavy braking force.
The X44 headtube works with modern tapered forks and aids in superior handling. It also improves the versatility of the bike – you can fit nearly any fork standard in the market onto this frame, guaranteeing use and versatility for years to come.
Mudguards are fitted as standard to the CK7, taking take up to 28mm tyres. If you remove the mudguards for fair weather riding, you can fit 30mm tyres. The CK7 Disc also has mounts for pannier racks – these are not included.

Basso is one of the only long-standing European bike manufacturers who still produce their bikes completely in-house. From their carbon frames to the majority of their finishing kit, Basso bikes are made in Dueville, Italy. The Tera Urban is the flat bar version of the Basso Tera; it has a big clearance, is lightweight and, due to its flat bars, has a slightly more upright riding position.

And a smart, interchangeable rack and rail system lets you pick and choose from dozens of possible configurations to suit the mission.
