Path Less Pedaled Visits Velo Domestique

We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Russ and Laura from Path Less Pedaled to Velo Domestique whilst they were exploring the UK and attending this year's Brother in the Wild gathering in the New Forest. We're super grateful for them taking the time to learn about us and create such an awesome video – thank you.

We've been involved with Brother in the Wild since it first started in 2017, providing food and coffee in various forms and organising ride outs since the event's early days. This year, we hosted our Field Feast – a pre-booked communal dining experience celebrating local produce, open-fire cooking and the kind of food we love to share with people.

After spending the week riding, camping and documenting the event, Russ and Laura made the short trip to Southbourne to visit Velo Domestique. We showed them around our workshop, bike display, kitchen and cafe, talked about cargo bikes, custom builds, community cycling and of course introduced them to our breakfast burrito.

More Than a Bike Shop

When we opened in 2016, our aim wasn't simply to sell bikes. We wanted to create a welcoming community space built around good coffee, good food and cycling in all its forms, an alternative to the more traditional cycling groups and clubs.

Over the years that has naturally evolved into what Velo is today: part cafe, part bike shop, part workshop and, perhaps most importantly, a place where people feel comfortable spending time.

Whether you're popping in for a flat white, getting a puncture fixed or collecting a custom-built cargo bike, everyone is welcome.

Bikes, Repairs & Custom Builds

Our workshop focuses on quality over quantity.

Rather than squeezing in as many repairs as possible, we limit the number of bikes we take on each day so we can give every job the attention it deserves.

Alongside servicing and repairs, we also specialise in custom bike builds. We work closely with brands we genuinely believe in, including Brother Cycles, Moots, Omnium and Larry vs Harry Bullitt.

Many of our customers start with a coffee and a chat, then gradually build a relationship with us before embarking on a custom build or cargo bike purchase. It's a slower, more personal approach to bike retail that works well for us.

Speciality Coffee Since Day One

Coffee has always been a huge part of Velo Domestique.

In fact, when we first opened, we only served filter coffee, something that was almost unheard of locally at the time.

Today, our house coffee comes from Hard Lines Coffee Roasters in Cardiff. Their House Party espresso has become a favourite amongst both our team and customers, particularly in milk-based drinks, while their rotating single origins keep things interesting for those looking to explore different flavour profiles.

Our approach remains simple: serve consistently excellent coffee in a relaxed environment.

The Breakfast Burrito

If you've visited Velo before, there's a good chance you've heard somebody talking about the breakfast burrito or tried it yourself.

Over the years it has become one of our most popular dishes, earning a reputation that extends far beyond Bournemouth. During their visit, Russ and Laura heard more than one customer talking about the burrito, including one who described it as "the stuff of dreams".

Rather than simply wrapping up a traditional English breakfast, our burrito takes inspiration from Mexican flavours, combining ingredients like our house-made chipotle dressing and jalapeño jam with perfectly balanced fillings that bring together richness, spice and freshness.

Alongside the burrito, our menu changes seasonally and regularly features tacos, pancakes and a variety of dishes designed to cater for different dietary requirements without compromising on flavour.

Food for Everyone

One of the things we're most proud of is our commitment to making sure everyone can enjoy great food, regardless of dietary requirements.

Whether you're vegan, gluten-free or somewhere in between, we've always believed nobody should feel like an afterthought when dining out.

That philosophy extends beyond the cafe and into the events we cater, including our work with Brother in the Wild, where we've helped provide inclusive, high-quality food for riders and festival-goers over several years.

Building a Cycling Community

Perhaps the most meaningful part of the conversation was discussing how cycling culture has changed over the last decade.

When we first started running rides and events, cycling in the UK often felt heavily focused on sport and performance. We've always wanted to create something slightly different: a space for people who ride for transport, adventure, utility, family life, fitness, fun or simply because they enjoy being on a bike.

That's one of the reasons we have embraced gravel bikes, cargo bikes and utility cycling alongside more traditional cycling disciplines.

We believe bikes should be accessible to everyone.

Our workshop reflects that too. It doesn't matter whether your bike cost £100 or £10,000 – if it's important to you, it's important to us.

Over the years we've watched customers go from grabbing a morning coffee to bringing in their bikes for servicing, then eventually purchasing cargo bikes, custom builds and family bikes. Seeing those relationships develop is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Thanks for Visiting

A huge thank you to Russ and Laura for taking the time to visit us during their UK trip, and for creating such an awesome video. We're incredibly grateful that they chose to spend time with us, learn about what we do and share our little corner of the cycling world with their audience.

If you've discovered Velo Domestique through Path Less Pedaled, we'd love to welcome you for a coffee, a breakfast burrito or simply a chat about bikes next time you're in Dorset.

And if you're local and haven't yet watched the video, grab a coffee and give it a watch above.
